At eighty, internationally acclaimed Dutch architect Herman Hertzberger invited colleagues and students to reflect on the future of architecture. While questioning the profession's status as 'the discipline par excellence that has lent itself to the representation of a new, better world', Hertzberger acknowledges that 'it is exactly when the ground under your feet is collapsing that you need elevation'. In this pamphlet, Herman Hertzberger, Anna Heringer, Jean-Philippe Vassal and other contributors opt for ' building as building up, composing, multiplying, improving and establishing: the opposite of decline'. Recognizing the need to change our lifestyle and the way we build if we want to preserve the planet for future generations, these pages offer optimism, making the case to abandon all preconceptions and imagine a new way of practicing architecture that is not a derivative or feeble reflection of today's reality. The envisioned architect is sensitive to ecology, responsible, fair, creative and communicative.

Met het boek neemt A2O-architecten stelling in een wereld waar 'de waan van de dag' lijkt te overheersen. Door te focussen op 'connectiviteit', authenticiteit en duurzaamheid wil A2O-architecten een eigen kleur laten zien binnen het veld van de architectuur in Vlaanderen, België en in de Euregio Maas-Rijn. A2O-architecten maakt 'connecties': knooppunten en kortsluitingen, waar alles samenkomt en samen valt. Tijdens het ontwerpen verweven we plekken, tijden, dingen, mensen met elkaar. Hier krijgen de tussenruimtes vorm. Het boek vormt als het ware de connectie tussen A2O en haar omgeving. In deze tussenruimte worden ideeën getoond, standpunten ten opzichte van het vakgebied ingenomen, uitgangspunten voor een duurzame leefomgeving geformuleerd en het engagement met het maken getoond. Dit krijgt vorm in een publicatie die rijk geïllustreerd zal zijn en waar de connectiviteit in de architectuur een hoofdrol speelt.

Ce colloque international s'est penché sur l'analyse du rôle et de l'action des femmes commanditaires d'édifices et de monuments, dans le monde oriental comme dans le monde occidental.
